Are cellphones killing bees?

CCD: Colony Collapse Disorder has been ravaging bee colonies around the world. If it continues, some people are worried that it will wipe out the honeybee, seriously affecting our eco-system.

The Independent recently reported that cellphones & celltowers might be the cause! Is this true? Or is this just inflammatory journalism?

That cell phone and towers are responsible for honeybee declines is TOTALLY bogus! My husband works in that field, and manage over 50 hives, and he debunked that theory the first time we heard of it. So, don't worry about using your cell phones. You won't be affecting the honeybees at all.

Hi info,

You might want to ask your husband what frequency the towers he considered operates. Old cellphones operated at around 900 MHz. More recently, they began operating at 1900 MHz. Still more recently, with the proliferation of Wi-Fi and WiMAX for high speed wireless internet, the frequencies involved begin at 2.5 GHz (2500 MHz) and go up from there.

Before dismissing radiowaves as a possible source, you may want to consider what frequencies are involved. The interaction between matter and radiowaves depends strongly on the fruequencies involved.

By the way, did you know that 2.5GHz, the frequency used by Wi-Fi and WiMAX, is exactly the same frequency used in microwaves?
